Course Overview

If you have ever wondered how your body works and what happens when things go wrong then this is the course for you. This two-year qualification provides an insight into working within biomedical science, microbiology, genetics and medical physics professions, alongside a focus on the application of biological concepts within industry. Learners can exit at the end of Year 1, obtaining a National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science or progress onto Year 2, to achieve the full National Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Biomedical Science). The requirements of the qualification will help you to develop the transferable and practical skills that are highly regarded by both HE and employers. Within the course there are biomedical science units which allow an insight into this specialist area combining of optional modules (subject to change) opening doors into both employment and further study in a range of applied science areas. There are opportunities for project development and the potential to enter World Skills competitions. Learners should expect to attend classes delivered over 4 days per week.

4 GCSEs (Grade C or above) including a Science subject, plus English and Maths

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs (Grade 05 or above) including a Science subject, plus English and Maths; OR Leaving Cert Applied - (Merit) to include one Science elective module.

Further Study

This course will provide an opportunity to progress to employment within the science industry or higher education courses, including the Foundation Degree in Applied and Medical Sciences course offered at NWRC or Honours Degree courses in Biological or Biomedical Sciences, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Pharmacology, Veterinary Science, Radiography, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy among others.

Career Prospects

A qualification in applied science will help you to develop the understanding, knowledge and skills needed to work in a broad range of jobs in this industry. These could include Agricultural Research Scientist, Ambulance Paramedic, Analytical Scientist, Audiologist, Biochemist, Biologist, Biomedical Scientist, , Chemical Engineer, Chemical Plant Process Operator, Food Scientist, Health and Safety Inspector, Laboratory Technician, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Microbiologist, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist etc. It is also recognised by both the Science Council and Royal Society of Chemistry as a course which will contribute to a professional qualification of RSciTech.
