Course Overview

This course is designed to develop the understanding and skills relating to children’s care, learning and development. It will provide you with the required qualification for working in a supervised role in the early years and childcare sector as a pre-school, nursery or playgroup assistant, classroom assistant or care assistant. You will work in an Early Years specialist resource room which is fully equipped with play equipment to plan weekly practical activities, explore sensory resources and have opportunities to care for the ‘Real Care Babies, as well as outdoor trips and competitions. Previous years have included working alongside Norwegian students and exploration of forest schools.Skills that you will develop to perform well in the workplace include:• excellent communication skills• the ability to work with children in a sensitive and positive way• creativity and imagination while creating monthly displays • planning and organisational skills. You will be assessed via practical tasks, assignments and work placement assessments which means that you have no exams to sit.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs Grades D-G to include Maths and English Grade D or above

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs (Grade O5-O8 or above) or equivalent to include Maths and English at Grade O5 or above. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert or Junior Cycle qualification should have attained a majority of higher-level subjects including English and Maths

Work Placement

Work placement is a mandatory component of this course. Enrolment on this course is subject to checks, including a satisfactory Access NI check. As placement is an integral part of your qualification, a self-declaration of current health status is implicit as part of the overall risk assessment process.

Upon completion you may progress onto the Level 3 Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning and Development.

Career Prospects

Some students move into employment in the Early Years sector, however many of our Level 2 students choose to progress to a higher level course with us before progressing to become Childcare Managers, Teachers and Social Workers. Students hoping to advance their careers at university must achieve the university admissions criteria.
