Course Overview

This course is aimed at students who have completed their GCSEs or mature learners who are returning to full-time education. Through coursework and practical activities, you will begin to develop knowledge and skills required for progression to higher level sports programme or a career in this exciting industry. You will study units about the structure and function of the systemswithin the human body; how to plan and deliver coaching sessions; the components of fitness and how these are tested; and you will also take part in outdoor activities such as orienteering and canoeing. You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy if you do not have a GCSEGrade C or equivalent in English and Maths. You will have the opportunity to gain coaching skills and real-life industry experience.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs Grade D-G or above to include Maths Grade E and English Grade D or above.

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs Grade O5 - O8 or above to include Maths at O6 and English O5 or above. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert or Junior Cycle qualification should have attained a majority of higher-level subjects including English and Maths

What's Next?

Further Study

Successful students can progress to any of our Level 3 Sport programmes i.e. Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences or L3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services. The course is an excellent progression pathway to our Level 3 programmes in Sport.

Career Prospects

Successful students who gain extra qualifications in addition to studying their Level 2 in Sport may wish to progress to employment. These extra qualifications include coaching awards through the College’s Coach Education Programme and also the YMCA Level 2 Fitness Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer.
