Niamh Doherty will be among our Higher Education students who will graduate at North West Regional College’s (NWRC) Higher Education and Access Graduation ceremony.
The 21 year-old gave birth to her baby son Joshua three months ago – and says the support she got from her lecturers, classmates and other staff helped her achieve a Higher National Diploma.
“I went to St Cecilia’s College before I came to NWRC, I did my A-levels in Fashion and Textiles and Fine Art,” she said.
“I always knew Art was for me, but I wasn’t ready to go to university or move away so I decided to enrol on the Foundation Diploma course.
“My grandad Sean Mellon previously taught at NWRC, and he said the college would be a great steppingstone for me. He was right. I loved the Foundation Diploma so much I stayed on to do my HND.
“In my second year I found out I was pregnant, but I was determined to finish my education. I got so much support through my tutors and classmates and finished my qualification.
“My tutors Elaina, Kathleen, Jeannie, Conor and Meghan were so supportive – not just with the emotional support but also physically helping me prepare for my exhibitions. I really owe it all to them. If it hadn’t been for them I wouldn’t be graduating.”
Three months ago Niamh gave birth to baby Joshua. She’s looking forward to celebrating her graduation at the Millennium Forum on October 30.
See you there Niamh!
