Good luck to all our Kickstart to I.T. students – Gareth, David, Seamus, Keith, Jason, Shane, David, Charlie, Antony, Lorcan, Rafsan and Alfred who have finished the college part of their course and have now begun their work placement.

And special congratulations to David Tyre who was nominated as the 2022 student of the year!

Kickstart to I.T., run in partnership with Derry and Strabane District Council , is a 16 week course that provides specialist training for students to enable them to successfully apply for IT software roles. The course, which is full-time offers students a placement of at least four weeks with a local software company and a guaranteed job interview with participating companies.

Lecturer in Computing at NWRC, Kevin McLaughlin, revealed that, despite the short nature of the course, students learn a wide range of programming functions.

“This software fundamentals course will allow students with no background in IT to quickly learn a range of skills and programming languages that they can put into practise in the workplace,” he said.

“It includes Java, SQL, Manual Software Testing and Test automation.

“The local software industry is a growing one, particularly in the current climate, and the successful completion of this course can leave candidates strongly equipped to successfully gain employment and thrive in it.”

The next Kickstart to I.T. course will begin later this year – if you want any more information contact eileen.mcgrinder@derrystrabane.com
