After completing the Level 3 Diploma in Uniformed Protective Services at NWRC Limavady, Leona Orr is now studying for a Law Degree at Ulster University.
The Level 3 course which is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels was perfect for Leona from Derry~Londonderry who says mainstream education never suited her.
She hopes her law degree at Magee will support her ambition to join the army, become a legal officer and complete a Masters in Military law.
“I’d never heard of a course like UPS,” she said. “It sounded like something I’d enjoy so I booked an appointment with a NWRC careers adviser who helped me get enrolled. At the start I was a bit anxious getting the bus to Limavady every day, but I got used to it quickly.
“When I met my lecturer Ivor Neill I had no idea how much my life was going to change. I came out of Ivor’s class with 2 distinction *s. His teaching methods are second to none. Ivor was patient and he always took time to explain what was happening. He has a range of methods to sure that we understood the course.
“He’s the best teacher I ever had – Ivor’s style of teaching was life-changing for many of us – I can say that without hesitation.
“One of the people in my class is now on the Degree in Paramedic Science at Ulster, another is working for G4S and another is a firefighter. Uniformed Protective Services is a pathway into so many careers.
“I even got a chance for travel as part of my course and went to Malaga.
“I have recommended this course to so many of my friends. It opens such a wide range of opportunities.”
This course is of particular interest for those who wish to pursue a career in the Police, Fire, Ambulance, and Prison as well as the Armed Services (Army, Navy, and RAF), HM Customs and Excise and other emergency-related organisations.
The course supports students to become occupationally ready for employment in the uniformed public services sector at the appropriate level either directly after achieving the qualification or via the stepping stone of Higher Education (HE) in university or college.
Potential careers include work in the public services, for example, the police, coast guard, fire service, and armed forces.
